Fact-check: Fraudulent Islamabad traffic police website selling fake driving licences exposed

Further examination by Geo Fact Check revealed that none of the links on the fraudulent website's home page, including “About,” “Services,” and “Contact,” are functional

Online users have reported that a dodgy website purporting to be the Islamabad Traffic Police was selling fake driving licences.

The claim is true.

Claim

On August 7, an X (formerly Twitter) user shared a screenshot of a purported Islamabad Traffic Police webpage requesting users to enter their identity card numbers to verify their driving licences. The post, which included a link to the website https://dlims-itp.com/, alleged that this was a fake website created to sell licences.

Fact

Two officials from the Islamabad police have confirmed that the website is fraudulent.

Taqi Jawad, the public relations officer of the Islamabad police, confirmed to Geo Fact Check that the website is not affiliated with the Islamabad police. He stated, “We are taking action against this fake website. Our cybercrime wing is working to have it taken down.”

Abdul Rasheed, a sub-inspector in the information technology department of the Islamabad police, reported that the police have traced the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the fraudulent site and have submitted a complaint to the cybercrime department.

Further examination by Geo Fact Check revealed that none of the links on the fraudulent website's home page, including “About,” “Services,” and “Contact,” are functional, indicating that the site is not authentic.
