SeaWorld in San Diego is celebrating the birthday of the oldest known macaroni penguin in North America.

The penguin, named Best Friend, turned 40 on Wednesday, becoming the oldest of its kind, according to UPI.

The expected lifespan of a macaroni penguin is 15-20 years in the wild.

SeaWorld shared the significance of Best Friend’s 40th birthday as a macaroni penguin even in human care tends to live up to 30 years “because they are protected from predators and receive regular veterinary care”.

“Seeing a macaroni penguin reach 40 years old is a BIG milestone and a testament to the expert care he receives at SeaWorld!,” the post continued.

The park added that Best Friend is nicknamed the “most precious old man” at the sanctuary and he also suffers from failing eyesight due to old age but can still hear perfectly and can identify his keepers by their voice.

Best Friend’s favourite hobbies and daily activities include “ "bubble-blowing antics in his water tray," "joyfully playing with trickling hoses" and letting out "ecstatic calls when spoken to."

The park also added that the penguin likes to “curl up in a lap for a cosy nap when the mood strikes”.
