Miley Cyrus is also pushing back against accusations that her chart-topping single Flowers plagiarized Bruno Mars’ 2012 hit When I Was Your Man.

The lawsuit, filed by Tempo Music Investments in September, alleges that Cyrus “intentionally copies” elements of Mars’ ballad, including melody, harmonies, and chord progressions.

According to Daily Mail, Cyrus’ legal team has dismissed the copyright infringement claims, asserting that Tempo Music lacks standing to sue.

In court documents obtained by People, her attorneys argued that only individuals with exclusive rights to a song can file such a lawsuit,

Moreover, Tempo Music, which holds a portion of the copyright through co-writer Phillip Lawrence’s catalog, does not have rights tied to the song’s other co-writer, Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt.

Additionally, the lawsuit has drawn attention after fans and critics noted similarities between Flowers and Mars’ track, as per the publication.

In regards to this, Tempo Music has demanded unspecified damages and even called for Flowers to be removed from streaming platforms and future physical releases of Cyrus’ 2023 album, Endless Summer Vacation.

Despite the claims, Cyrus’ lawyers emphasized that “an assignee of only one co-author lacks exclusive rights and, therefore, also lacks standing to sue for infringement,” as per the outlet.

It is worth mentioning that both songs have achieved major success on the Billboard Hot 100 while When I Was Your Man earned Mars a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2014, Flowers won Record of the Year and has solidified its place as one of Cyrus’ career-defining hits.
