Alec Baldwin's legal issues from the 2021 shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins might not be resolved yet.
Special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey has appealed to the New Mexico Court of Appeals, challenging earlier decisions to drop involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin.
According to Deadline's report, the appeal filed on November 21, focuses on key decisions. Firstly, the dismissal of charges against Baldwin in July 2024 and the rejection of the state's request to review that dismissal in October.
The legal action came after Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case, citing evidence suppression.
Moreover, Hutchins was tragically killed, and director Joel Souza was injured, on October 21, 2021, when the Colt 45 revolver Baldwin was holding discharged a live round during a rehearsal on Rust set, as per the outlet.
Meanwhile, Baldwin has maintained that he did not pull the trigger and claimed that the fun fired on its own as the investigations by the FBI and other experts have disputed his account.
Additionally, the case has been fraught with complications, including initial charges dropped in 2023 due to alleged incompetence by the local District Attorney’s office.
Furthermore, Morrissey refiled the case in 2024 but has faced repeated setbacks in court, as per the publication.
It is worth mentioning that despite the dismissal of criminal charges, Baldwin still faces multiple civil lawsuits related to the shooting while Morrissey's new appeal could potentially reopen the criminal case, placing Baldwin under renewed scrutiny.
