Lily Allen, a renowned actress, singer, and songwriter, recently got candid and reflected on her struggles with drinking.
While giving an interview to The Times, Allen explained how addiction was always a “when” for her, not an "if,” and added that self-medication remained an “inevitable” option owing to the deep-rooted addiction in her family.
The Air Balloon singer quipped, “I think addiction runs deep in my family, so self-medicating was going to be on the cards. For me, it didn’t really feel like an ‘if,’ it was a ‘when.’”
Allen always talked about her past with drink and drug abuse and said quitting alcohol and drugs was the “best decision she ever made.”
The 39-year-old star, who is now an ambassador for the Forward Trust charity, also spoke about how the presence of drugs and alcohol growing up made her feel “unsafe.”
Moving forward, she added that the most important thing about her sobriety is that her own children Marine and Ethel “feel safe. That’s the main thing for me. I felt very unsafe in my childhood, and my kids feel safe.”
Allen highlighted that children help keep her on track and joked that they “monitor” her attendance at AA meetings.
Moreover, the Dreamland actress recalled a time when she showed up drunk at her ex-husband’s house to confront him after he started dating someone and how that argument upset her kids.
Calling to mind that incident, she stated, “I drank myself into oblivion. I went over to his house and started screaming at him, woke the kids up, you know, really distressed the children. They remember that. And they know that I was under the influence then and that it’s important that Mummy avoids getting into those situations.”
It is significant to mention that after achieving sobriety, Allen has not drunk alcohol since July 28, 2019.
