Shrek director Vicky Jenson had no idea that the film would become a lasting cultural phenomenon.
Vicky, whose newest animated directorial work Spellbound is on Netflix now, says she and the small team that worked on Shrek never saw the success of the movie coming.
“It just felt very small because it was a tight team. We felt like we were on our own for a lot of the time.
“It really wasn't until a few sequences started coming back in lighting, and we were watching full screenings, [that we] were going, ‘Wow, this. This is different.’ This could either work really well or not at all.”
The critical acclaim that followed Shrek’s screening at the Cannes Film Festival showed Vicky and the team that this could become a really big thing.
In 2001, Shrek became one of the highest-grossing films of the box office and inspired three sequels, with Shrek 5 confirmed to be in the works.
Vicky Jenson doesn’t intend to return for Shrek 5, however, she’s curious to see where the franchise takes the story.
“I'm very curious, just like everybody else, to see the fifth one," she said of Shrek 5. "It's just like watching your kid graduate high school and go to college and then graduate college and go and get married — it’s like, it's not up to me anymore. This is your life, you know?”
