Jennifer Garner is opening up about how she's holding up with the loss.
The 13 Going on 30 star announced the demise of her nine-year-old dog on November 27, revealing that Birdie had stopped eating before her final vet visit.
The sad passing of Birdie coincided with the return of Violet, 19, who had returned home to Los Angeles from Yale University upon holiday break.
While Garner has been “heartbroken,” a source revealed that “having Violet home from university helped,” the mother-of-three, noting that the family had a “nice Thanksgiving.”
The actress spent the holiday with ex-husband Ben Affleck and their three children Violet, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.
“They celebrated Thanksgiving as a family,” the insider added. “The kids love having everyone together. Jen hosted dinner at her house.”
The former couple and their children also volunteered together at L.A. homeless shelter The Midnight Mission's annual Thanksgiving Street Fair, where the Garner seemed in good spirits.
Per Garner's post, Violet was just in time for a final goodbye to the golden retriever—who she grew up with after Birdie was adopted when Violet was just 10.
"The vet told us that dogs often hang on until their person comes home from college and we believe Birdie did just that," read a passage from Garner's long tribute to the dog.
Garner is currently dating CaliGroup CEO John Miller while Affleck recently split from Jennifer Lopez.
