Daniel Wroughton Craig CMG, a famous actor who goes by the name Daniel Craig, recently reflected on his “biggest reservation” regarding portraying James Bond.
While promoting his film Queer, Craig shared with The New Yorker, saying, “I would say one of my biggest reservations about playing [Bond] would be the construct of masculinity.”
He has said he has no “regrets” about leaving the role, adding that he is not “involved in finding the next Bond.”
Moving forward, linking this to the idea of masculinity and the William S. Burroughs character he plays in Queer, Craig quipped, “The vulnerability of human beings is always interesting to me.”
The 56-year-old star added, “We’re all vulnerable. It doesn’t matter who you are. It doesn’t matter how tough you are; everybody’s vulnerable. But it’s how boys are brought up, how men are expected to behave, how someone like Burroughs was expected to behave.”
“Listen, [Bond] is nearly 20 years of my life. When I took it on I was one person. I’m now a completely different person. I’m not doing this movie in response to that. I’m not that small. But I couldn’t have done this movie when I was doing Bond. It would’ve felt kind of, ‘Why? What are you trying to prove?'” the Skyfall alum highlighted, referring to Queer.
Craig remarked that he felt “suddenly kind of free” to do other projects following his exit from Bond.
Notably, Craig, who has starred in a range of films like Spectra and Quantum of Solace, played James Bond in five movies from Casino Royale (2006) to No Time to Die (2021).
For the unversed, Queer, based on the novella by Burroughs, published in 1985, is set in 1950s Mexico City.
The story follows Lee (Craig), a lonely American in his forties who becomes drawn to Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young student.
It is pertinent to mention that Queer was released with a limited theatrical release on November 27, 2024, after its premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in September 2024.
