Gwen Stefani, a renowned singer, songwriter, and fashion designer, recently got candid and opened up about a song that paved her way to success.
While having a conversation with People magazine, the pop singer revealed that she would not still be here today if she did not sing one “special” song titled Don’t Speak.
Shedding light on her career-making hit, which was included in No Doubt’s 1995 album Tragic Kingdom, Stefani articulated, "That song was written by my brother [No Doubt cofounder and ex-member Eric Stefani]. He would stay up all night and smoke cigarettes and eat burritos and write.”
"It was completely different when he wrote it,” the 55-year-old wife of Blake Shelton added.
She recalled, "When the band played their new songs for their label, they said, 'We love the chorus. You should try to simplify the verses.’”
"He sat at the piano with me and goes, 'Doo, doo, doo,' and he started with this super-edited version of the melody of the verse. Tony [Kanal, No Doubt’s bassist] had split up with me, and I was about ready to die, and I wrote the words,” the Hollaback Girl hitmaker shared. (sic)
Stefani highlighted, "It’s one of those crazy rewrites—probably the only one in history ever that actually turned out to be the heartbeat of my entire life," adding, "I wouldn’t be here without that song."
For the unversed, No Doubt started in Anaheim, California, in 1986 with Stefani as the lead singer, joined by guitarist Tom Dumont, drummer Adrian Young, and Kanal.
After taking a break in 2015, the band, which has won two Grammys, reunited this April for a special show at the Coachella festival in Indio, California.
Taking into account the success of the ‘90s band, the Early Winter singer stated, "We worked so hard, and we had so much chemistry. We weren’t trying to 'make it.' Every time we went to the studio, it felt like we were escaping real life to do what we loved. That’s why the music we made then feels so unbelievably pure."
It is noteworthy to mention that the band became famous in 1995 with Just a Girl as the lead single from Tragic Kingdom.
