Phil Collins just named the Led Zeppelin track that won his heart.
For the former Genesis member, he particularly recalled being awestruck when Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham synchronized to the melody of the classic song, When The Levee Breaks.
An excited Collins stated, “It’s probably one of the best drum recordings ever made in pop music,” adding, “It’s just groove, sound, attitude.”
The famous Academy Award winning drummer has remained an honorary member of the popular rock band for a brief Live Aid reunion.
Recalling Bonham’s prowess, the You’ll Be In My Heart hitmaker had some big shoes to fill in for, over which Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page said, “Robert (Plant) told me Phil Collins wanted to play with us. I told him that was all right if he knows the numbers.”
He continued, “But at the end of the day, he didn’t know anything. We played Whole Lotta Love, and he was just there bashing away cluelessly and grinning. I thought that was really a joke.”
Over this, Collins had his own take, mentioning, “If I could have walked off, I would have done,” further explaining, “It was a disaster, really.”
The drummer mentioned, “Robert wasn’t match-fit with his voice and Jimmy was out of it, dribbling. It wasn’t my fault it was crap.”
In general, despite Phil Collins’ experience with Led Zeppelin being a not-so ideal ordeal, him hailing the band’s sensational music in itself says a lot.
