Prince William will attend Saturday's re-opening of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, Kensington Palace said on Friday, but his wife, Catherine, will not accompany him.

"The Prince of Wales will travel to Paris tomorrow to attend the ceremony marking the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral," the palace said in a statement.

"His Royal Highness is travelling at the request of His Majesty's Government on behalf of the United Kingdom," it added.

The Prince of Wales, 42, will stand alongside dozens of other world leaders, including president-elect Donald Trump at the historic monument.

Trump is known to a critic of the  Duchess of Sussex and in 2021 he reported said,  “I’m not a fan of hers. I wasn’t from day one. I think Harry has been used horribly and I think some day he will regret it. I think Harry’s been used and been used terribly. I think it’s ruined his relationship with his family, and it hurts the Queen. She is trying do things that I think are very inappropriate.”

Around 50 heads of state and government are expected in the French capital for the ceremony.
