Beloved 2000’s show Gilmore Girls has inspired a wave of new fans in gen z, and they want a reboot or a spin-off.
However, in an interview with E! News, Scott Patterson, who played the grumpy and straight-forward Luke on Gilmore Girls, explained why he thinks a spin-off of the lovable show wouldn’t be up to the mark.
“I brought this up to Peter Roth [Warner Bros] once advocating for my own spinoff and he told me something steeped in TV history wisdom,” Patterson explained.
“He said, ‘Scott, people would miss the other characters so much, because the show is so chock full of rich, wonderful characters.’”
“And boy was that a smart thing to say because he nailed it,” Patterson remarked.
Lauren Graham, who played fun-loving Lorelai Gilmore on the show, suggested the one spinoff idea that could work.
“You could do the high school Lorelai,” she said.
“We’re talking about this as if it’s like The Hobbit or something, which I’m not sure it is,” she noted. “But I think the way other universes have dealt with that question is just going back or forward.”
“Then you have the problem of you got to cast young Babette and younger Miss Patty, so I don’t know,” she pointed out.
Lauren Graham was joined in the Gilmore Girls main cast by Alexis Bledel, who played her daughter Rory, Melissa McCarthy, who played her best friend Sookie, and Scott Patterson as Luke. The show ran for seven seasons from 2000 and 2007. The story was continued in a 2016 Netflix miniseries.
