Olivia Wilde recently made shocking claims about social media being "dangerous" for movies.
The 40-year-old actress-turned-director explained at the Red Sea Film Festival, said, "Directors have to decide at a certain point do you want to be a celebrity or an artist."
“Because of social media,” the Don't Worry Darling director said, adding, “It’s becoming even more combined to something that is quite dangerous for the art form.”
“When you conflate filmmaking or acting with large scale acceptance,” she went on to say, adding, “You immediately cut off every opportunity to do any risky work.”
According to Wilde, it was important to her to never become overly focused on being accepted or loved.
The 40-year-old director also shared her keen interest in movies from countries that are not dominated by the online world.
“I’m so interested in films coming from a society that has been indoctrinated with the same amount of cliché material,” she said.
The filmmaker added, “I don’t make movies so people love them.”
She continued, “I want people to enjoy them. But I think it’s a losing game if you’re trying to make everybody’s favorite movie.”
Before concluding, Wilde said, “Success is about being connected to creating something that is true to the idea that you have as an authentic extension of you, not about whether people approve of it.”
