Spike Lee, a celebrated film director, recently opened up about his long-standing friendship and working relationship with Denzel Washington.

According to Deadline, Lee was in a conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on Tuesday, November 10, where he talked about Washington.

He articulated, “Someone pointed out to me that the last time we worked together was 18 years ago. I was surprised because it didn’t feel that way. I’m very blessed to have done five films together; he is arguably the best actor on the planet.”

The Son of the South creator added, “We’re brothers. We just do our thing. We’re familiar with one another... our families are very tight,” referring to Washington’s son John David Washington’s inclusion in BlacKkKlansman

Lee then went on to shed light on his collaboration with Washington in Malcolm X, describing his depiction of the legendary human rights activist as “the best performance in a biopic ever.”

Moving forward, the 67-year-old filmmaker seemed happy for Washington’s nomination for Gladiator 2, and he even asked the interviewers, “Has anyone seen Gladiator 2?”

For the unversed, Lee is currently working with Washington on his upcoming movie titled Highest 2 Lowest, which is in the post-production stage.

It is pertinent to mention that Highest 2 Lowest is their fifth movie together following their collaboration in films, including Inside Man, He Got Game, Malcolm X, and Mo’ Better Blues.
