Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton visited Jamaica in March 2022  as part of a week-long Caribbean tour.

The royal visits to Caribbean nations are seen as an effort to convince other former British colonies to stay on as "realms" of the British monarchy amid a rising regional movement towards republicanism.

The royal couple's efforts to convince the nation have apparently failed to make any impact as the Jamaican government has published its bill to amend the Constitution to provide for a non-monarchical Head of State.

Their visit was marred by protests as activists demanded reparations for slavery amid growing scrutiny of the British Empire's colonial legacy.

The new legislation is aimed at establishing Jamaica as a republic, according to multiple reports.

"Be IT ANCTED by the Parliament and people of Jamaica, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and the House of Representatives of Jamaica in accordance with the provisions of section 49 of the Constitution of Jamaica," read the second paragraph of the bill.

The government also aim to delete the words,, "Her Majesty", "His Majesty, "Crown" and other reference to the monarchy in the constitution of the country through the amendment.
