Director Jeff Fowler has a history of introducing new characters from the Sonic universe and using them in the next installments.

That’s what he does with one of the post-credit scenes of Sonic 3. During an interview with GamesRadar+, he said, “I think it's always: 'Which character is going to give us something new?'"

By introducing Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, Jeff has followed a similar pattern he does with Tails' arrival in the first Sonic movie, which played a key part in Sonic 2, and then followed by Shadow's entry, which vice-versa was the crucial element in Sonic 3.

"In terms of the storytelling, we know where we've been. We're always looking for the next movie to have something unique or offer something fresh to the storytelling."

"We always make these choices based on where we kind of want the world to go. That's certainly how we chose Shadow at the end of [Sonic 2], wanting to bring in someone who can challenge Team Sonic in exciting ways. I think this film is the same," he said.

Sonic 4 will be out in 2027.
