LONDON: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) organised a huge power show in London to celebrate former prime minister and party's top leader Nawaz Sharif’s birthday.
Organised by businessman and PML-N UK President Ahsan Dar, who was recently appointed by Nawaz as the UK party chief, nearly 1,000 PML-N supporters attended the birthday event at a hotel in West London.
This was the largest event PML-N has held in several years. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif was the chief guest and especially flew to London for the event.
The last event by PML-N UK at this scale and level was in 2006 when Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif were about to end their exile under Pervez Musharraf and return to Pakistan from London. PML-N workers from several parts of the UK — and some from Europe — also attended the event.
Ahead of the birthday event, Ahsan and PML-N UK Secretary-General Rashid Hashmi toured the UK to announce new chapters with new roles. A few months ago, the PML-N supremo had decided to change old bodies with the new structure, replacing Zubair Gull, who served as PML-N UK president for nearly two decades, with Ahsan and his team. Dar’s brother, Umar Dar, was elected as Punjab Assembly member during general elections earlier this year.
Before cutting the cake to celebrate birthdays of Nawaz Sharif and Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and to mark the Christmas festivities, speeches were made with Asif and Ahsan as headline speakers.
Ahsan said: “This is a record turnout. More than 1,000 people attended Nawaz Sharif’s birthday party to show solidarity and love for our leader, the benefactor of Pakistan. There are many more who could find no place inside the venue and returned. A lot more wanted to come but we told them there was a limited space available.
"Nawaz Sharif remains the only leader of Pakistan who has almost each and every development and economic initiative to his credit. He has benefitted Pakistan like no one else and its duty to pay homage to his role. His work is continued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the federal and Maryam Nawaz Sharif in Punjab."
Meanwhile, Asif lashed out at former prime minister Imran Khan and his “politics of poison, negativity and destruction”.
