Johnny Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, revealed the key strategy they implemented so that the actor could win the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
In a recent episode of A&E special Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath, the lawyer talked about the strategy that they planned for the trial.
He reflected upon defamation trial of 2022, and said, "Johnny's use of humor really undermined whatever serious point Amber's counsel was trying to make."
"We wanted to humanize Johnny before the jury so they could understand why hitting the woman he loved was something that he's just not capable of," he added.
"But, the one thing that we're concerned about is whether he might lose his temper. The other side is gonna do everything possible to get Johnny to show anger."
He went on to share that one of the things that "lawyers try to do on cross-examination is to maintain control of the witness."
"That's something that Johnny simply did not allow [Heard's attorney Ben Rottenborn] to do," Chew said.
Before concluding, the lawyer shared, "He was elated, and he sounded as if the weight of the world was off of his shoulders, I mean, he sounded like a kid. He was thrilled."
For those unversed, the jury sided with Depp and ordered Heard to pay $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages after the high-profile libel case.
