Home Alone director has finally solved the mystery of how Kevin McAllister’s parents were able to afford that majestic house and vacations for their big family.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence in Winnetka, Illinois featured in the Christmas film has been the centre of debate for fans ever since the movie was released in 1990.
However, director Chris Columbus has now revealed what Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin’s parents did to make such a good living.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Columbus said: “Back then, John and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were.”
Kevin’s mom Kate McCallister (played by Catherine O’Hara) “was a very successful fashion designer,” which the director noted was hinted at by the presence of mannequins in the house’s basement.
He couldn’t recall what John Heard’s Peter McCallister did, saying, “The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did.”
He then clarified that Peter didn’t have any ties to organized crime, which some fans theorized was the reason that Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s Wet Bandits target his house.
“Not organized crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organized crime in Chicago,” Christopher Columbus clarified.
