This weekend saw major box office milestones as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Wicked: Part One achieved record-breaking success.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 maintained the position at the top of the domestic box office in its second week, earning $38 million domestically and a franchise-best $74 million internationally as it expanded to global markets.
According to Daily Mail, Wicked: Part One climbed to fourth place with $19.45 million in domestic earnings and the film has now officially become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history, surpassing Mamma Mia! (2008).
Moreover, the musical has amassed $424.2 million domestically and $634.3 million worldwide.
Additionally, Ariana Grande, one of the film’s stars, celebrated the achievement on social media, sharing a post with the caption, “Rejoicify! Wicked has surpassed Mamma Mia! to become the highest-grossing musical adaptation of all time globally!”
In other box office updates, Mufasa: The Lion King secured the second spot with $37.1 million, followed by Nosferatu, which debuted in third place with $21.15 million.
Meanwhile, Moana 2 rounded out the top five, earning $18.2 million over the holiday weekend.
As per the publication, despite the holiday surge, other films saw mixed results.
Timothée Chalamet's A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic, debuted in sixth place with $11.6 million for the weekend, while Nicole Kidman's thriller Babygirl entered at seventh place with $4.4 million.
Furthermore, faith-based drama Homestead and sports biopic The Fire Inside also made appearances in the top ten.
