Jelly Roll has performed Should've Been a Cowboy on several occasions ever sine Keith passed away in February 2024 after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Previously explaining to Variety that Keith and his songs like Should’ve Been a Cowboy, The Next Thing on My List and I Love This Bar are the reason why he shifted from the rock genre to country music.

Jelly Roll, gushing over late Toby Keith, further mentioned, "He was very individualistic and carved his own path and he did it his own way, from pillar to post. He never knew it, but he was a mentor to me, just watching him from afar."
