Dolly Parton has arguably wielded fame that many would only imagine.
However, in her interview with Southern Living, the country musician said her relationship with popularity is more of a surprise than joy.
"I think I’m a star to everybody but me," she shared after her career boomed while joining the musical variety show The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967. "I always wanted to be famous, but nobody could have thought of the extent it became. I’ll see a whole wall of my pictures somewhere, and I’ll wonder ‘How did that happen?’ It’s more a joy than a surprise."
Elsewhere in the interview, the Jolene hitmaker also reflected on her joy of writing songs.
“I walk around with a song in my head and in my heart," the 78-year-old continued, adding she sometimes got so much absorbed in the activity that she often forgets what she was doing.
"I’ll go into a closet and wonder, ‘Now, what in the hell did I come in here for?'" Dolly concluded. "There’s nothing that makes me happier than writing a song."
