QUETTA: The Levies forces in three districts of Balochistan, Quetta, Gwadar, and Lasbela, have been formally merged with the police, The News reported.

The decision was finalised during a meeting presided over by Balochistan Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan.

Government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the completion of the merger, stressing that it is expected to enhance the province’s ability to maintain law and order effectively.

The director general of the Levies in Balochistan had sent a letter to the additional chief secretary of Home Department, recommending the merger of Levies Quetta with Quetta police, Gwadar Levies with Gwadar police and Lasbela Levies with Lasbela and Hub police.

A total of 1,116 personnel from the Levies across these three districts have now been incorporated in the police force.

These include various ranks such as weapons inspectors, clerks, risaldars, naib risaldars, dafadars, khassadars, jumadars, havildars, sepoys, wireless operators and footmen from Grade 1 to Grade 11.

The breakdown is as follows: 346 Levies personnel from Quetta have been merged with the police, 381 personnel with Gwadar police, 220 in Lasbela police and 219 with Hub police.

Sources indicate that the transfer of Levies police stations, vehicles, weapons and other official equipment will take place after a thorough assessment.

Spokesperson for the government of Balochistan said that the merger of Levies with the police in Quetta, Gwadar, and Lasbela will strengthen the law enforcement system.

This step will lead to more effective policing and better coordination between law enforcement agencies, he added.
