Cyndi Lauper faced online backlash following a video of her performance during the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour that went viral for controversial reasons.
The video, shared by an account on X (formerly Twitter), showed the 71-year-old singer sporting teal hair and a metallic silver outfit as she energetically performed her 1985 hit The Goonies 'R' Good Enough.
Critics questioned her performance, with one commenter writing, "WTF happened to Cyndi Lauper?" while another stated, "She’s 71 for heaven’s sake. Quit already. You’re embarrassing yourself."
According to Daily Mail, fans passionately defended Lauper against the ageist and misogynistic remarks.
Music critic and internet personality Anthony Fantano responded, “She dropped multiple hits, made many albums, aged, and had a career that resulted in a fan base that she’s still performing for decades later. Will you be able to do the same?”
Moreover, fans echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Lauper’s enduring legacy and courage. “She’s 71 and still moving great and singing. It takes a lot of courage to keep going,” one fan wrote.
Meanwhile, others emphasized the societal pressures of aging, with a comment stating, “She’s entitled to grow old. Even old ladies can bop.”
As per the publication, the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, Lauper’s first major tour in a decade, began in Montreal in October 2024 and is scheduled to conclude in Paris in February 2025.
Additionally, the singer expressed her desire to thank fans through a farewell tour while still in good shape.
Furthermore, over her four-decade career, Lauper has sold more than 50 million records, achieved Billboard No. 1 hits like Time After Time and True Colors, and won a Tony Award for her work on Kinky Boots.
