Sophie Wessex could have become the Queen of her husband, Prince Edward, accepted an unlikely offer.

The couple, who is now the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, were offered a key role in 1991 when Soviet Union broke down.

After the breakdown, new country emerged out of the Soviet Bloc, including Estonia.

The Independent Royalist Party at the time then offered Prince Edward to become their top man and sent a formal invitation. This came after the party noticed Edward’s leadership skills.

The Sunday Telegraph reported at the time, that they thought he would be "perfect" for the role and they admired him "enormously".

“However, it wasn't to be, and Buckingham Palace sent a response politely declining the offer to make Edward, and therefore his now-wife Sophie, the King and Queen. The palace is said to have replied, that it was a "charming idea but a rather unlikely one,” Mirror notes.

At the time, Edward was third in line to the throne after now King Charles and Prince Andrew.
