Barry Keoghan is coming to terms with his late mother's difficulties as a parent.
The Irish actor, 32, was advocating for better social care of children via a new video for the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
The conversation shifted to his childhood spent in foster homes following his mother's death as UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy pointed out that his time in the system must have “weighed very heavily” on him, to which Keoghan agreed.
The Oscar-nominated actor, who lived in 13 different foster homes growing up before moving in with his grandmother, emphasised the need for "a good care system," which he added was lucky to have during his challenging childhood.
“As I’ve got older and I’ve had my own son. I realised that it was such hard work for her and, you know, her and my father. And luckily there was a good care system there, which is massively important.”
The father-of-one went on to tell the British politician that he wants to work with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to “change” the state of children’s social care because “you can use your profile and your platform to shine a light on things.”
“Anything to do with kids and care, I’m always wanting to help,” Keoghan continued. “And shine a light on it, and get attention to it.”
