Liza Minnelli, an American actress, is the face of the new documentary, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Making an appearance in the documentary is Tony Award winner, Ben Vereen, who discusses his intense romantic relationship with the star.
It follows her series of public marriages, four to be specific, as well as the subsequent divorces with big names like Martin Scorsese, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Peter Sellers.
When faced with a old black and white photo of the two, Vereen remarked, "She said, 'I want to take a picture just or us,'. I said, 'OK, sure.' So I took off my shirt, she took off her blouse. We took the shot. What the photo is saying is exactly what was in my mind: 'I got you.'”
"Then the next thing I know, it was in Newsweek. All over the world,” he added.
Although it is not revealed in the documentary when exactly the two were together, the most likely timeline is of the 70s, between his relationships with Andrea Townsley and Nancy Bruner.
Reflecting on their relationship, the actor explained, “I’m sure a lot of society was shocked, but it never even entered our bubble. It was two people sharing a moment in time. It doesn’t stop to say, ‘Well, what does that White guy think about it?’ Or ‘What’s that Black guy gonna think about it?’ We didn’t care. It was in our world."
As Vereen watched an old clip of them together, he grew emotional, "I guess you’d call it love. I loved Liza. That’s my baby.”
