Jeff Buckley's mother is going unfiltered on why Brad Pitt couldn't land a role in the late musician's biopic.
Mary Guibert revealed in a recent interview that despite Pitt's immense help with the biopic, the actor could not land the role of the late guitarist.
“If there’s 20 people calling you, and Brad Pitt is one of them, who are you gonna pick to go see?” Guibert told Variety with a laugh.
The guitarist's mother revealed that the award-winning actor, now 61, had first formally requested her permission to create the biopic in the early 2000s—which she granted.
Guibert then recalled explaining to Pitt why he could not be cast as Buckley.
“‘We’re going to dye your hair, put brown contact lenses on those baby blues, and you’re going to open your mouth and Jeff’s voice is going to come out?” she recounted her answer to Pitt.
Guibert remembered staying in touch over the years even after she eventually decided against the biopic and went ahead with a documentary instead to honour the life of her only son.
Even then, Guibert received immense help from Pitt in preserving all of Buckley’s belongings and bringing into a digital space.
He even became a producer on the film, called It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, per Variety.
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24.
