KARACHI: A seminar on the issues of minorities presided by former Chief Justice Supreme Court Rana Bhagwan Das was organized in University of Karachi by Karachi University Journalism Alumni Association (KUJAA) and Department of Mass communication on Thursday.
The seminar held in the Arts Auditorium of University of Karachi was attended by Bishop of Pakistan Dr. Eijaz Enayat, Dean Islam Faculty Dr. Shakeel Oaj, former member of Sindh Assembly Michael Javed, Director Pakistan studies department Dr. Jafar Ahmed, Chairman of Mass Communication department Dr. Tahir Masood, General Secretary KUJAA Abid Hussain, and Dean Faculty of Arts Professor Malahat Karim Sherwani.
Addressing the Seminar Chief Justice retired Rana Bhagwan Das said that the word ‘minority’ should be replaced by the word non-Muslim as it hurt the sentiments of people.
“All the religions talk about the humanity, while Islam is a universal religion that talks about equality of people, adding that last Prophets’ behavior towards non-Muslims is the lesson for Muslims”, said he.
He quoted an excerpt from Quaid-e-Azam’s address on August 11, 1947 in which he had said: “You are free to go mosques, churches and temples and each and every citizen of Pakistan would be equal before the law.”
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Jaffar said that we had forgotten the vision of Pakistan and certain forces were using the name Islam for their own interest. According to Taliban Jamat-e-Islami (the flag-bearer of Islam) was not a party of Muslims as they took oath under an un-Islamic constitution, he added.
Other speakers were of the view that Islam was a peaceful religion and all Muslims followed the real Islam while 5 percent of extremists were making tainting the image of Pakistan.
They condemned the kidnapping and forcing Hindu and Christian girls to embrace Islam.
In the end the distinguished scholars paid tribute to Dr. Professor Tahir Masood for organizing a seminar on this issue.
