US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit Washington on Friday to finalise an agreement on rare earth minerals, Reuters reported.

However, the deal’s success remains uncertain, as Zelenskiy indicated its outcome depends on discussions with Trump.

The agreement would see Ukraine allocate a portion of its mineral resource revenue to a joint US-Ukraine fund. Kyiv hopes to secure stronger American backing as Trump pushes for a swift resolution to Russia’s war, with ongoing US-Russia negotiations continuing without Ukraine’s involvement.

Trump stated that while the agreement covers rare earths and other issues, the US will not offer broad security guarantees. "I’m not going to make security guarantees beyond – very much. We’re going to have Europe do that," he said.

Zelenskiy stressed that the deal should not frame Ukraine as indebted for previous US military aid. "This agreement could be part of future security guarantees... but we need to understand the broader vision," he said.

Despite Trump’s confirmation of the visit, a White House official suggested it was not yet finalised.

Meanwhile, US-Russia diplomatic talks continue, with officials set to meet in Istanbul on Thursday.
