LAHORE: President Asif Ali Zardari has claimed that conspiracies hatched by national and international institutions led to the Pakistan Peoples Party's defeat in the general elections.
The president met PPP election candidates from Punjab on Monday and said the party would play the role of opposition with full vigor. Yousuf Raza Gilani, Manzoor Watoo were among those who called on the president at Bilawal House in Lahore. “PPP could have won 40-45 seats in the Punjab,” President Zardari said.
According to Zardari, he could not take part in the election campaign due to restrictions placed on the office of president. “I will take active part in politics after my presidential tenure expires.”
The president added that all three of his children will be active in politics.
