Fact-check: Deepfake video falsely claims Trump criticised Pakistan's treatment of Christians

The video has been online since 2024, when Trump recorded a message for those affected by Hurricane Milton in Florida

A short video, viewed over a million times on social media, appears to show US President Donald J Trump criticising Pakistan for its treatment of Christians and threatening to relocate all Christian families from the country.

The claim is false. The video was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Claim

On March 22, an Instagram user shared a 24-second video allegedly showing Donald Trump stating: “I know that Christians in Pakistan are living very difficult lives. False blasphemy accusations are made against them. Christian girls are forcibly converted to Islam and are called derogatory names like easi and chura. If the Pakistani government does not put an end to these injustices, I will bring all Pakistani Christians to America.”

The video further claims that this speech was aired on BBC News. The Instagram post has garnered over 1.2 million views and has been shared over 33,000 times.

Similar claims have circulated on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, where users believe Trump made this statement.

Fact

The video is a deepfake created using AI. There are no press releases or credible media reports to suggest that Trump made any such statement about Pakistan.

A reverse image search using Yandex revealed that the video has been online since October 10, 2024, when Trump recorded a message for those affected by Hurricane Milton in Florida. The footage has been altered to misrepresent his speech, as he made no mention of Pakistan in the speech.

The original 2024 video message can be viewed here:

Geo Fact Check also searched for any recent press releases or media reports indicating that Trump made such a statement but found none.

Additionally, Asad Baig, founder of the Islamabad-based Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD), analysed the footage at Geo Fact Check’s request. “This one is clearly fake,” Baig told Geo Fact Check over the phone, adding that the facial expressions, voice, and tone in the video do not match Donald Trump’s.

Verdict: The viral video is a deepfake and falsely attributes statements to Trump. There is no evidence that he made such remarks about Pakistani Christians.
