Fact-check: Iqra Aziz did not mock PM Shehbaz Sharif's caller tune
Updated Tuesday Apr 22 2025
Earlier this month, after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reduction in electricity prices, the federal government launched a promotional campaign to publicise the move. This included playing an automated message from the prime minister as a caller tune.
Soon after, a screenshot began circulating on social media, allegedly showing Pakistani actress Iqra Aziz mocking the caller tune in a Facebook post.
The claim is false. No such post or comment was made by the actress.
Claim
On April 14, a Facebook user claimed that actress Iqra Aziz “humorously commented on social media,” urging the prime minister to increase electricity prices by Rs100 per unit rather than reduce them, if it meant removing the caller tune featuring his voice.
“Her witty remark quickly went viral, resonating with many who found the caller tune message annoying,” the user further added.
The post included a screenshot of a supposed post by Aziz in Urdu, which read: “Raise the electricity prices by Rs100, but please remove Shehbaz Sharif’s voice from the caller tune.”
The alleged screenshot was also shared on X (formerly Twitter), where some users believed it to be genuine. One post criticised the actress for making light of rising inflation.
Fact
Iqra Aziz did not make any such statement. The post originated from a Facebook account which was pretending to be associated with the actress.
The fraudulent post has since been deleted.
Maida Azmat, the chief operating officer at MINT PR, the agency managing Aziz’s media and communications, confirmed to Geo Fact Check that the post was fake. Azmat said: “It’s a fake account that has posted this.”
The impersonator Facebook account, which uploaded the post on April 13, has also since deleted the post. The page can be viewed here.
MINT PR also shared the link to Aziz’s official Facebook page, which contained no such post mocking the prime minister on or around April 13.
Here is the link to Aziz’s official page.
Verdict: The viral post claiming that actress Iqra Aziz mocked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s caller tune and urged him to raise electricity prices is false. The statement originated from a fake Facebook account impersonating the actress.
