Bulgaria's ex-PM makes professional football debut

SOFIA: Bulgaria's former prime minister Boyko Borisov made his professional football debut on Sunday in Vitosha Bistritsa's goalless draw against Rakovski in the country's second-tier league, media reported Monday.

The 54-year-old Borisov, who resigned under massive street pressure in February, made history by becoming the oldest player to appear for a Bulgarian professional club, sports website sportal.bg reported.

The bulky ex-premier, who wore number 13, played 54 minutes in Vitosha's home draw.

Borisov had already played amateur football for the club before they secured a berth in the second division this season.

In 2011, he won the annual fans' player of the year poll but urged organisers to annul the results.

The former bodyguard and police chief had been ordered by his doctors to refrain from playing sport after twice being hospitalised with severely high blood pressure in March but was reported to be in excellent health now. (AFP)
