ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said that the Judicial Commission Commission (JCP)had become fully functional and was fairly active.
Adrressing the joint meeting of the JCP held here under his chairmanship, the CJ highlighted the work done during the previous meetings.
"Eversince, the Judicial Commission became functional, a total of 66 meetings have been convened.
The first meeting was a combined meeting of all members of the Commission to settle modalities and formulate rules of procedure", he noted.
He said the remaining meetings were for selection of judges in the Supreme Court, Federal Shariat Court and the High Courts.
As many as nine judges were elevated to the Supreme Court and six were appointed in the Federal Shariat Court, he added.
He said some 23 additional judges were appointed, tenure of 23 was extended and 39 were confirmed as judges of the Lahore High Court.Likewise, 17 additional judges were appointed, tenure of 15 was extended and 10 were confirmed as judges of Peshawar High Court.
Similarly, he said, 19 additional judges were appointed, tenure of 25 was extended and 11 were confirmed as judges of High Court of Shindh.
The Chief Justice said that six additional judges were appointed, tenure of four was extended and seven were confirmed as judges of High Court of Balochistan while five additional judges were appointed, tenure of one was extended and six were confirmed as judges of Islamabad High Court. Later, the meeting discussed different items as prescribed in the agenda.
