KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Transport Youth and Sports Affairs Mumtaz Hussain Jakhrani on Monday distributed cash rewards and souvenirs among street children football team that clinched bronze medal in the Street Children World Cup 2014.

A ceremony in this regard was held at sports minister’s office which was attended by Minister for Social Welfare Rubina Sadat Qaimkhani, Minister for Kutchi Abadis Javed Nagori and Member Provincial Assembly Sania Naz and Azad Foundation representative Irfan Maqbool.

The minister gave away cash rewards each worth Rs 50,000 to each team member with a souvenir. Addressing the ceremony, the minister applauded efforts of non governmental organizations and Rubina Qaimkhani for assisting these children in participating at the world cup event in Brazil.

“Without the support of NGOs and social welfare department, it was not possible for these children to lift national flag in the event,” he said.

Jakhrani appreciated the devotion of children as despite lack of funds they showed their complete dedication in the event and defeated one of the important teams including India and United States.

The minister said that there was a cricket fever in our country and lot of money was spent on cricket players but they had always disappointed the nation with their abysmal performance.

“We will be focusing more on the street children’s football game and an event at provincial and district level would be organized by the provincial department in July in order to get more talent in this field,” he said.

Rubina Qaimkhani said that the federal government had given no attention towards these children and despite their excellent performance not a single word of appreciation had come from them. No rewards were announced by federal government which showed their negligence towards these football heroes.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Kutchi Abadis Javed Nagori said that the success of these children had showed that Karachi had a talent to prove. These children hails from poor neighborhoods of Lyari and Manghopir and their performance has given these areas a new identity.
