THE HAGUE, Netherlands: The United States upset England 2-1 Sunday in the women´s field hockey World Cup, scoring two early goals and then holding on for a hard-fought victory.
Paige Selenski tipped in a penalty corner in just the third minute to put the 10th-ranked U.S. ahead. Kelsey Kolojejchick doubled the lead in the 15th, deflecting in another corner.
Kate Richardson-Walsh pulled a goal back for third-ranked England with a 56th-minute penalty corner.
"One of our goals going into the tournament is executing our penalty corners and I think we did that really well today," Selenski said. "I think that can make or break a tournament like this."
In other women´s matches, China and Germany played out a 1-1 draw and Argentina beat South Africa 4-1.In the men´s tournament, Germany beat South Africa 4-0 and the Netherlands overcame Argentina 3-1.
In the final men´s match, Steve Edwards scored with a one-handed effort inside the first minute to give New Zealand a 1-0 lead over South Korea before Kim Seong-kyu equalized in in the 64th.
New Zealand snatched the win five minutes later when veteran Phil Burrows pounced on a rebound from a penalty corner and slapped it into the net. (AP)
