DUBAI: Australia were 196 for eight at tea on the fifth and final day of the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday.
Mitchell Johnson was unbeaten on 54 and with him number ten Peter Siddle was batting on four as Australia needed to bat another 30 overs to force a draw.
Pakistan, who set a 438-run target, need two more wickets for a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Zulfiqar Babar (4-71) and leg-spinner Yasir Shah (3-42) shared the bowling honours.
Johnson added 65 for the eighth wicket with Steven Smith who made 55 after Australia were reeling at 117-7.
