ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Monday elected the Speaker of the House where Sardar Ayaz Sadiq secured 268 votes and the runner up PTI's Shafqat Mahmood secured 31 votes.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq secured 10 more votes than he had received when he was elected Speaker by the same house for the first time.
Voting ended at 01:00PM on Monday where the contest was between PMLN’s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and the PTI’s Shafqat Mahmood.
The announcement of the new Speaker of the House is expected shortly.
The ruling party’s candidate and former Speaker Ayaz Sadiq enjoys 188 seats in the house of 342 and he has the support of FATA members as well as the MQM.
Speaking to the media Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah said he has voted for Ayaz Sadiq because of his track record while Maulana Fazlur Rahman expressed his views against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) non-serious politics.
PTI's candidate Shafqat Mahmood told journalists he is aware that the numbers do not stack up in his favour but added that his party has resolved to compete against the PMLN on every forum.
The first vote was cast by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. PTI Chairman Imran Khan also arrived at the National Assembly after an absence of six months to cast his vote but immediately left after fulfilling the duty.
Ayaz Sadiq’s election from NA122 was declared void by the election tribunal on the request of the PTI chairman on the 21st of August this year, however Sadiq was reelected from the same constituency in the by-election.
