We set Pakistan's direction right: Zardari

NAUDERO: President Asif Ali Zardari Thursday claimed that his party during its five-year rule set Pakistan's direction right besides strengthening democracy in the country despite hurdles and 'weaknesses', Geo News reported.

Addressing a gathering in Naudero to mark the 34th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, President Zardari said the world has seen many great leaders but none of them could be compared to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. "I have read history and found none like Bhutto".

President Zardari admitted that there must have been certain shortcomings in the five-year term of Pakistan People's Party (PPP)-led government but added that these were part and parcel of democracy.

Zardari said although he had the opportunity not to transfer the powers to the Parliament but he took steps that were in the greater interest of the country and the coming generations.

He asked people to listen to their conscience while casting their vote in the upcoming elections.

Earlier, PPP patron-in-chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in his address said: "During the last five years we weren't even allowed to take a breather."

"People's Party-led government remained engaged in picking up the thorns littered by others besides fighting their lost battle," he maintained.

Praising the PPP's performance, he said it was due to the effective policies pursued by his party that today a peasant has 'Roti, Kapra aur Makan' (bread, clothing and shelter).

He paid rich tributes to shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and asked the people in attendance to give their assurance to put a stamp on arrow - the election symbol of PPP - in the upcoming ballot.
