ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Sunday stressed the importance and need for holding transparent general elections in the country, Geo News reported.
Addressing an International Judicial Conference here, the Chief Justice said it was the judiciary is duty-bound to fulfill its responsibility towards holding of free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
CJ Iftikhar Chaudhary said ‘the judiciary is the third pillar of the state and independent judiciary plays a vital role in dispensing justice to the society’. Masses confidence in the judiciary has witnessed improvement in recent years, the chief justice observed and underscored need to strengthen it (judiciary) as an institution.
The present judiciary is different from pre-2007 era, he said. The CJ added that this institution is taking measures to ensure rule of law in the country.
Mr. Chaudhry said Pakistan just any other developing country but a nuclear power.
The CJ described completion of the five-year tenure by the democratic government as a welcome development. He said the day is not far off when there will be a good governance in the country and linked it to an independent judiciary.
