KARACHI: Sindh High Court Chief Justice Mushir Alam has named judges for the three election tribunals in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur.
Zafar Khan Sherwani, Ashfaq Baloch and Zaheer Legahri have been suggested by the SHC for the election tribunals in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur respectively.
The chief justice has proposed that three more tribunals should be set keeping in view number of cases.
The Election Tribunals set up in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur were dissolved on Monday after the SHC Chief Justice expressed concerns over their constitution.
The SHC chief justice had conveyed his reservations in this regard to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) through a letter. The SHC Registrar had sent a note to Chief Justice Mushir Alam in which he expressed reservations about the formation of the Election Tribunals.
He said that a notification for the tribunals was issued without consulting the high court of the province. It was contended that the Supreme Court had clearly ordered that a judicial forum could only be formed in consultation with the high court of the province.
The SHC Registrar also wrote to the ECP to withdraw the heads of the notified tribunals, asking it to appoint a tribunal head as per the decision of the Supreme Court.
The ECP on Monday wrote a letter to the SHC Registrar submitting that it has dissolved the set up of the three election tribunals in the province and asked it to suggest names of heads for the new tribunals.
