KARACHI: At least 20 death-row and life-sentence prisoners were relocated from Karachi’s Central Jail to a Sukkur prison following a search-and-clean-up operation in the city's maximum security penal facility, Geo News reported.

"The convicts have been moved to Sukkur jail owing to security concerns, which Saturday's crackdown in the jail laid bare", the jail authorities told Geo News.

According to sources privy to matters, among the transferred captives are some of the deadliest terrorists belonging to outlawed militant outfits.

Earlier, a big contingent of Rangers abetted by police conducted a joint search operation in the central jail here.

According to sources, during the search operation, the paramilitary troops recovered a cell phone, which, they claimed, was used in plotting a bomb attack on Sindh High Court’s senior judge Justice Maqbool Baqar a few days back.

The security-men confiscated a large number of mobile phones, laptops, and drugs during barrack-to-barrack and prisoner-to-prisoner search, which started on early Saturday morning.

The lawmen also claimed to have recovered various types of arms from the inmates.

At least 200 Rangers and police took part in the search operation during which the jail police was strictly ordered not to interfere and stay out of it.

“The jail police were locked out of the building as Rangers and other cops conducted operation”, said an official.

The police and Rangers personnel surrounded the Central Jail, Karachi to conduct search operation.

The search operation was conducted on a tip-off that arms, drugs, cell phones, and other items prohibited were abundant in the jail.

It is said that banned outfits had warned that they would launch an attack on Karachi Central Jail today, following which the crackdown was initiated.

It may be recalled that a few days back the same prison came under a cracker attack.
