PM Nawaz pledges to safeguard democracy

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Thursday vowed to pull Pakistan out of difficulties and make it an economically strong country as he addressed a gathering of Pakistani Americans.

The Prime Minister who is in New York for the UN General Assembly session said his government’s policies have already resulted in macro economic improvement with rupee regaining its value. The government’s economic performance has been acknowledged by the international financial institutions who have upgraded the country’s economic outlook.

The Prime Minister said, “Pakistan Army needs to be congratulated for its success in Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan as part of the country’s broader counter-terrorism campaign. The government is committed to rehabilitating the internally displaced persons from the militancy-hit areas,” he said.

Commenting on the current political situation, the Prime Minister said his government came into being as a result of free and fair elections which have been accepted so by the international community.

The Prime Minister said his party has been working for consolidating democracy and did not organize any long marches or demonstration to destabilize the previous government.

“The only long march the PML-N launched was for the restoration of independent judiciary,” he said.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, Ambassador to the United States Jalil Abbas Jilani and Consul General in New York Raja Ali Ejaz.
