MULTAN: Voting is underway for the by-election in NA-149 wherein 346,924 voters will exercise their franchise in the constituency.
The NA-149 seat was vacated when former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Javed Hashmi resigned. 18 candidates are contesting for the vacant seat in the constituency.
Javed Hashmi and Amir Dogar have mustered support from the PML-N and PTI respectively while Dr Javed Siddiqui is contesting from the PPP platform.
Groups clash at polling station 132
A clash was reported between groups supporting Javed Hashmi and Amir Dogar at polling station 132 over fake votes. Voting has been stopped at this women’s polling station.
After the police failed to control the situation, the Rangers were called in.
Dogar alleges government machinery behind Hashmi
Amir Dogar, without presenting any proof, alleged that the government machinery was being used to secure a win for Javed Hashmi. After casting his vote, Dogar told journalists, “the presiding officers are playing their role in securing a win for the government’s candidate.”
Hashmi hopeful of winning
Senior politician Javed Hashmi said he was hopeful of securing a win in the constituency. Hashmi said he had never filed an election petition and was always the first to congratulate the winning candidate if he was defeated. “Whatever the results will be, they should be accepted.”
Polling process
There are 286 polling stations set up in the constituency out of which 144 polling had been reserved for men and 142 for women. In order to deal with any untoward incident, Rangers and police have been deployed at 107 stations declared as sensitive.
The district administration has declared a public holiday in the constituency while section 144 has also been imposed.
Polling in the constituency will conclude at 5 PM.
Magnetic ink not being used
Magnetic ink is not being used during the polling for the NA-149 by-election. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) a special ink is being used which is able to verify thumbprints 100%.
