KARACHI: Following a privilege motion tabled by Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Sheharyar Mehar, the provincial government on Thursday formed a parliamentary committee to look into corruption allegations over Thar situation.
Earlier, the assembly witnessed an exchange of hot words between the treasury and opposition benches for the second day in a row over the issue. Mehar alleged that the Tehsil Municipal Officer (TMO) of Lakhi town was involved in corruption of Rs10 million per month as no development work is witnessed in the area.
He went on to allege that the TMO has confessed to share the corruption money with Minister for Information and Local Bodies Sharjeel Inam Memon. Mehar also alleged that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) minister seeks bribes for expensive branded suits and vehicles.
Memon in response alleged that the TMO has in fact told him that he has been sharing the money with the opposition leader.
Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, in his ruling ordered an investigation report after interrogating the TMO in question.
Sindh Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah informed the house that a seven-member committee has been formed to look into the matter. The committee will submit its report soon after the probe.
Meanwhile, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Muhammad Hussain complained over unavailability of development funds for Karachi. Finance Minister Shah said that Karachi’s development budget has been increased to Rs32 billion, out of which Rs10 billion have already been issued.
