Alaska is located in the northwestern region of North America and joined the Union on January 3, 1959, as the 49th state. Positioned in the extreme northwest of the North American continent, it has participated in presidential elections since 1960. Since becoming a state, it has consistently held three electoral votes.
Historically, Alaska has supported Republican candidates, reflecting the party's policies. An exception occurred in 1964 when Alaska voted for the Republican candidate, Barry Goldwater, while Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democratic candidate, won the national election in a landslide.
This Republican trend persisted in the 2020 presidential election, where Donald Trump won the state with 52.8% of the votes, compared to 43.0% for Joe Biden.
