Arizona is located in the southwestern region of the United States and joined the Union on February 14, 1912, as the 48th state. The Grand Canyon State has traditionally leaned towards the Republican Party in presidential elections. An exception occurred in 1996 when Democratic candidate Bill Clinton won the state with 46.5% of the vote compared to the Republican candidate Bob Dole’s 44.3%.
Arizona has predominantly supported Republicans since 1952. However, the state presented challenges for the party in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. In 2016, Donald Trump won Arizona with 48.7% of the vote, while Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, received 45.1%.
The 2020 presidential election posed a significant challenge for the Republican Party. Joe Biden won Arizona by a narrow margin of 0.3%, securing 49.4% of the vote, while Donald Trump received 49.1%. This was the highest level of support for a Democratic candidate in the state since 1948 when Harry S. Truman won Arizona.
The state has a total of 11 electoral votes.
