Connecticut is one of the thirteen original colonies of the United States and is located in the northeastern corner of the country. It has participated in all presidential elections since it joined the Union on 9 January 1788.
The state had eight electoral votes from the 1930s until 2000. Due to population changes reflected by the US Census, Connecticut's electoral votes decreased to seven in 2004. Historically, Connecticut was a Republican stronghold.
However, in recent decades, the state has consistently leaned Democratic in presidential elections. In the 2020 presidential election, Democratic candidate Joe Biden defeated Republican Donald Trump by a margin of approximately 20 percentage points. Consequently, Connecticut is not considered a battleground state.
