District of Columbia

The District of Columbia, commonly known as Washington, DC, is the capital of the United States and is situated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US east coast.

It is the only non-state jurisdiction that participates in presidential elections, thanks to the 23rd Amendment, ratified in 1961. Since the 1964 election, the District of Columbia has had three electoral votes, a number established by the amendment and not strictly proportional to its population.

The District of Columbia has consistently supported Democratic candidates in presidential elections. In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden won with 92.2% of the vote in DC, while Donald Trump received only 5.4% of the vote.
